We’ve Been Shortlisted For Library Awards!

The glitz and the glamour

This November, we’ll be attending not 1 but 2 awards ceremonies, and we’re very excited about it!

Tuesday 26 November will see us heading north to the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds for the SCONUL Library Design Awards and Showcase. The Library has been shortlisted in the “small library” category, for a series of projects we have undertaken to transform library spaces within the Albert Sloman Library in Colchester.

Our submission was based on the impact on the student experience of the north wing extension, the remodelled entrance floor and the refurbished Library Reading Room. We hosted a visit from the judging panel in April. They met with library users, both staff and students to find out what they thought about the changes we have made. We have been on tenterhooks ever since awaiting the outcome!

Perhaps even more excitingly, we have been shortlisted for Outstanding Library Team in this year’s THE (Times Higher Education) Awards, and will be attending the awards ceremony on Thursday 28 November at Grosvenor House Hotel in London.

We’ve been shortlisted because:

  • We work in partnership with our users to shape services through the Library Advisory Group.
  • We’ve taken a collaborative approach to getting reading lists online and improving access to essential resources, working with academic colleagues and the Students’ Union.
  • We support students at key moments of their learning journey, for example through our “On Track for your Masters” workshop programme.

We’re thrilled that the whole team across all 3 campuses is being recognised in this way, and even if we don’t win, we’re still proud to have our efforts acknowledged.

Our other achievements in the past year have included:

  • Green Impact Gold Award
  • Certificate of Recognition from outgoing Students’ Union VP Education, Edmund Walker, for opening the Library 24/7, introducing laptop loans and making reading lists more available.

Both of these awards mean a great deal to us, as they represent a lot of hard work as well as our strong commitment to the transformational educational experience that Essex offers.

Keep your fingers crossed that we have to add another shelf to our awards display by the end of November!
