Essex Student Journal

What is the Essex Student Journal?

Formerly operated as ESTRO, the Essex Student Journal has recently relaunched onto a new publishing platform. The Essex Student Journal is an online multi-disciplinary academic journal and it aims to facilitate the publishing of high quality writing for both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

How does the Essex Student Journal differ from ESTRO?

The Essex Student Journal has relaunched onto a new publishing platform, Janeway. The platform provides a smoother publishing experience for both authors and peer reviewers. The author can submit their manuscript and access the feedback they receive via the platform. After registering on the platform, a reviewer will be able to see the manuscripts that have been assigned to them, which they can accept or reject. If they do accept a manuscript, the reviewer submits their feedback via the platform.

How does the Essex Student Journal help students?

The Essex Student Journal places students at its centre: it is a journal run by, and for, University of Essex students. The Essex Student Journal is a fantastic opportunity for students to have their work reviewed and published. It is a diamond open access journal, which means there are no Article Publishing Fees, nor any paywalls. So, a win-win!

When a manuscript is published in the journal, it will be assigned a Digital Object Identifier (DOI). A DOI is a unique alphanumeric string that is used to permanently identify a piece of intellectual property. The DOI helps a reader to easily locate and cite the publication. This is a fantastic way to increase the visibility of the author’s work. Wahoo!

All submissions are subject to a double-blind peer-review. This means that both the author and the reviewer remain anonymous throughout and will not be subject to any biases that may arise from knowing the identity of one another. So, whether you are an author or a reviewer, the Essex Student Journal is a great stepping stone to familiarising oneself with the publishing process.

How do I get involved?

We have great news! The Essex Student Journal is currently looking for papers! If you are a current undergraduate or postgraduate student at Essex and you have an essay, research paper, or case study that you would like to be published, this is a call to you. The Essex Student Journal is open for submission with no deadline; submissions are published online when they are ready. All submissions will be subject to peer review to decide whether they are suitable for the journal.

The Essex Student Journal is also looking for peer reviewers! The peer-review process is an integral part of the publishing process, as it determines whether a manuscript is suitable for publication. For an in-depth look into what being a peer reviewer entails, click here.

If you have any enquiries, please feel free to email the journal at journal@essex.ac.uk.

We look forward to reading your submissions and working with you!
