Welcome To The Library

Welcome to the Library!

Welcome Week is here! We have lots of activities planned in October, so you can learn more about the Library and what we offer. Keep reading to find out how you can get involved!

What’s happening:

Library tours:

At Colchester: we’ll be running guided tours Monday 3 October – Friday 14 October 10am-6pm, no need to book! Alternatively if you’d like to visit outside of these hours or just explore by yourself, our self-guided tour is available to complete at any time.

At Southend: guided tour times will be advertised at the Info Point at the beginning of every week, beginning Monday 10 October. Alternatively, there will be a self-guided tour available.

At Loughton: guided tours form part of the timetabled induction for new students. You’ll have the chance to visit the library, go over the basics and explore the library website.

Personalised one-to-one accessibility tours can be arranged through the Student Wellbeing and Inclusivity Services Team. Approach any Library staff in purple lanyards and we will gladly assist you in learning more about the accessibility services and resources we have for you.

Visit our stalls:

Visit our stands during Welcome Village and the Fresher’s Fair. We’ll be giving out information about our services, as well as freebies that you won’t want to miss!

At Colchester: Free books! Do we need to say more? Try our Blind Date With A Book; pick a mystery book that we’ve wrapped and added a brief description to, so no judging by appearances!

At Southend & Loughton: Library stalls will have a Hook-a-duck game where students can win prizes!

Books wrapped up in a colourful array of wrapping paper. On each covered book, there is a small piece of paper that gives a synopsis of the book.
Blind Date With a Book – visit our Welcome stall (Colchester campus) to take away a free book.

Welcome”:

Tell us where you have travelled from using a pin on our Map of the World board.
No matter how far you’ve travelled, moving to a new place can be daunting. Visit our displays to find out information about your new area.

Black History Month:

October is Black History Month, and there will be borrowable displays in the Libraries at all three of our campuses. The complete list of books and films can be viewed on our dedicated reading list. We’re always looking for suggestions to increase our collection’s diversity, so fill out our Purchase Suggestion Form if you can’t find a resource on our library catalogue.

As a University of Essex student, you also have access to watch and listen to Drama Online and our ‘Black Drama’ collection which includes 1,700 plays. You can find some of these resources collated on Loughton’s Black History Month reading list.

Workshops:

As an introduction to some of the services we provide, take a look at our ‘Getting Started Guide’.

Get ahead with your studies by booking onto one of our workshops. Accessed through our website, check over our list of events to see what workshops are available – both online and in-person.

Library Fair:

If you miss our Welcome activities, or want to find out more, we’ll be holding a Library Fair in November at the Albert Sloman Library.  We’ll be giving away freebies and information about our services.

This is a great opportunity to learn more about Reading Lists, Inter-library Loans, Accessibility, Special Collections, and your Academic Liaison Librarians. We’ll be announcing the date nearer the time.
